The Almost Unicorn
Lexa’s rational and skeptical mind won out. She stuffed her phone back in her messenger bag and held up her hand, silencing the boy mid-sentence. “Listen. I’ve been perfectly clear, but seeing as how you need it spelled out for you, allow me to try again.”
He looked like he was about to interrupt her, but Lexa just shook her head and pushed on. “I am a lesbian. I am not attracted to men, and this includes you. I don’t want to go out with you.”
She reached over and sardonically patted his shoulder before leaving the lecture hall in a frenzy. She kept her head low, not bothering to look where she was walking, which was precisely why she ran face first into a stiff back.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t- Clarke?” Lexa looked up to see Clarke twirl around and hastily zip up her hoodie.
“Hey, Lexa.”
“What are you doing here?” Lexa asked even though she was pretty sure she knew the answer, and dammit, she never hated her rational and skeptical mind more than she did at this moment. Clarke was going to be her unicorn. Her savior. And Lexa just threw that all away.
“Umm,” Clarke faltered as she nervously picked at her hoodie. “I had to, to... drop off a paper. You know, before our road trip this weekend.”
Lexa nodded, letting Clarke have that poor excuse because honestly, it was the least she could do, and put on the best smile she could muster. “Can I buy you a cup of coffee?”
Clarke’s entire body seemed to relax and buzz with excitement all a once. Lexa offered her hand and eagerly led them to the campus coffee shop as soon as warm fingers wrapped around her own.

The next evening,
Lexa was curled up
on her couch, half a
bottle of wine down
when her phone
trilled with a message.

Lexa stared at her phone. She wasn’t completely socially inept. She knew an invitation when she saw one. Clarke was extending that branch; all Lexa had to do was grab on.
I’m just listening to music, so I can’t promise you won’t be bored, but you could come over. If you’d like.
