The Sunset

Lexa leaned her hands on the metal railing, taking a deep breath before opening her eyes. The sun was setting, and the water below glistened with a stunning pink and orange palette. A cool breeze tickled her exposed back, but just before shivers made their way up her spine, a warm body engulfed her from behind.

“I wish I had my phone on me.”

Lexa squeezed the arms around her and smiled before turning in Clarke’s embrace. Clarke kept her arms firmly around her waist, and Lexa instinctively wrapped hers around her neck.

“You look absolutely stunning right now. Your hair blowing in the wind, that gorgeous sunset making your skin glow. I want to remember this forever.”

Lexa simply tilted her chin downwards, and Clarke eagerly met her in a soft kiss. “I’m glad you got my message.”

Clarke chuckled. “Yes, I did. You made Lincoln’s night, I think. He came up to me while I was chatting with my mom’s friend, you know, the gynecologist? He tried to insert himself in the conversation. Which was as impressive as it was hilarious to hear him talk about the pros and cons of water birth.”

“Oh, my god…” Lexa grumbled. She pressed her head to Clarke’s, staving off the secondhand embarrassment for her friend.

“Yeah,” Clarke chuckled. “And then he kept trying to grab my hand, and I had no idea what he was trying to get at, so I kept swatting him away. Dr. Jackson eventually noticed Lincoln’s weird behavior and asked him if he was feeling okay.”

“Oh, this just keeps getting better and better…”

“Then Lincoln grabbed my hand, very firmly I might add, and kissed my knuckles.”

Lexa smoothly reached a hand down and pulled Clarke’s away from her hip. With a devilish smirk, she perfectly re-enacted the hand kiss. “How very Jack Dawson of him…”

Clarke’s breath caught for a second, and her eyes went temporarily dark. But she reeled herself back in and replaced her hand on Lexa’s hip before exclaiming, “Exactly what I thought! He slipped your note into my hand and walked away with a little bow.”

“I don’t know why he just didn’t hand it to you like a normal person,” Lexa laughed.

“And that’s exactly what Dr. Jackson said! So what are we doing out here, tiger?”

Lexa sighed and twirled a perfectly curled strand of honey blonde hair around her finger. “I just wanted a moment away from everything to appreciate how stunningly beautiful my wife looks in her dress.”

“You just wanted to say wife,” Clarke teased, but her smile was anything but exasperated.

“I did. It feels so good!” Lexa groaned. Clarke laughed at Lexa’s antics, and the twinkle in her blue eyes was enough to embolden Lexa.

She swayed her hips gently to the melody of the water below, and Clarke perfectly matched her movements. They danced alone to their silent song as the sun continued to set behind them. Lexa tilted her head down, and the kiss was slow and full and perfect. They didn’t know it at the time, but they’d later learn that Lincoln had come to check on them, and finding them in a quiet embrace, snapped their favorite picture of the night before leaving them in peace.

“You ready to get back to the party? I think it’s just about time to cut the cake,” Clarke sighed, digging her fingertips into Lexa’s waist.

Lexa turned her head to face the water. The sun was almost set, and the glow was nearly as beautiful as the woman in her arms. “Let’s watch the sunset, and then we’ll go.”

“That sounds like a perfect plan,” Clarke nodded. She then smirked before adding, “Wife.”

Lexa recaptured Clarke’s mouth and kissed her until the sky turned dark. There would be other sunsets to watch. This one was much better spent in the arms of her wife while her kisses set her body on fire. And what a lovely way to burn.
