The Unity Day

Lexa woke with a start, sitting straight up in bed. Her heart was pounding against her ribcage, the rhythm fast, almost too fast. Lexa clutched at her soaked pajama shirt, gathering the fabric in her hand and desperately pulled it repeated away from her overheated skin. She sighed as crisp air circulated around her chest, cooling her slightly.

She silently rose from bed, her feet padding quietly on the metal floor, a welcome relief to her still hot body. She crossed the room and grabbed a cup from the cupboard, filling it from the tap. These dreams were always so intense. She had been told they were normal — her mind’s way to cope with the monotony and stress of her daily life.

Lexa chuckled to herself at that thought and rolled her eyes. She strolled the short distance to the small circular window, staring out at the world below. She took a sip of water, sighing as the cold drink slipped down her throat effectively putting out the last bit of remaining fire in her body.

Strong hands wrapped around her middle and a warm cheek pressed on her shoulder. Lexa relaxed into the embrace, setting her cup down and grasping the arms holding her. She nuzzled her head against blonde waves and was rewarded with a soft kiss to her shoulder.

“Dreams keeping you up again?”

Lexa nodded as she turned in the hold to face her wife. Clarke tilted her head sympathetically, her eyes searching Lexa’s face for any sign of lingering discomfort. “What was it this time?”

Lexa took a heavy breath and pressed a gentle kiss to Clarke’s forehead. “The demon one.”

“Oh, the one where it chases us through a college campus?”

“That’s the one.”

“I’m sorry, babe. I know that one is rough for you.” Clarke ran her hands soothingly up and down Lexa’s arms, and Lexa almost instantly relaxed at the feeling.

“I don’t like seeing you in danger.”

“Did we win this time?”

“We did,” Lexa nodded. She wrapped her arms around Clarke’s neck, smirking as Clarke instantly dropped her hands to her hips. “And I got to kiss you in the end.”

“You did, did you? What kind of kiss are we talking here?” Clarke leaned in close, their noses brushing as she spoke.

“The kind that usually leads to more pleasant dreams.” Lexa inched even closer, wanting to reenact the end of her dream with her wife. She was close, so close, and just when her lips brushed Clarke’s, Clarke pulled away. “What are you doing?”

Clarke gave her a coy little wink and walked the few feet towards their bed, stripping her sleep shirt over her head as she went. “Letting you live out the end of your dream.”

“Don’t you have to be at work in, oh,” Lexa glanced at the clock on their bedside table as she followed Clarke blindly. “Three hours?”

“Plenty of time.” Clarke edged her body up on the bed, pulling Lexa with her. She laid back, and Lexa held herself up on all fours, hovering just over her tantalizingly barely clothed wife.

“Won’t you be tired?”

Clarke ran her hands down Lexa’s side, settling them at the top of her thigh. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear you were trying to talk your way out of sex, tiger.”

“What? No. Never.”

Lexa sat up on her knees and pulled her still soaked shirt over her head, tossing it carelessly to the side. She lowered herself over Clarke, and she had to stifle a chuckle as Clarke pulled her down eagerly, hands tangling in her hair. Lexa let her weight rest on Clarke and settled a thigh firmly between Clarke’s legs. She rocked her hips into Clarke as she leaned down just slightly farther, her lips finally capturing Clarke’s.

She whipped her head to the side at the sound of banging on their compartment door, and Lexa’s startle had her leg pressing hard against Clarke. Clarke stifled a moan as Lexa exasperatingly called out to the intrusion. “Who is it?”

“It’s Jackson. I’m sorry. I know it’s late, but Dr. Griffin is needed down on Ark Medical Station.”

“I’ll be right there,” Clarke groaned. Lexa rolled off of her, allowing Clarke to untangle herself. “I’m sorry, babe. Looks like you’ll have to pick this up in your dreams after all.”

“Sometimes, I hate your job.” Lexa stood and retrieved her sleep shirt as Clarke quickly dressed for the day. Lexa tugged her shirt back over her body and made her way back to the small window.

Moments later, warm arms wrapped around her middle, and Lexa turned her cheek just enough for Clarke to press a lingering kiss there. “Try and get some sleep. I’ll see you later at the Unity Day celebration.”

“How could I forget?” Lexa mumbled. She hated all the attention she always received on Unity Day. She didn’t choose to be the one to remember life on the ground. She didn’t choose to have crazy intense lifelike dreams. She didn’t choose to have ALIE implanted in her brain. It was a byproduct of being the only living descendent of Beca over the age of sixteen at the time of the last descendant’s death.

Clarke gave a little hum, just to acknowledge she heard her, kissed her on the cheek and was off to save who knows who. Lexa folded her arms around her middle and peered at the earth below. She smiled to herself knowing they’d see it soon enough. It was the one thing good thing that came of being Beca’s descendant. She had finally figured out how to bring all thirteen stations to the ground safely, and she was going to make that announcement tonight at the Unity Day celebration with her soulmate by her side.
