The Warrior and Her Fairy Princess

The sparks danced once again in a deadly glimmer on Nia’s fingertips. But just as she raised her hand, Lexa raised the dagger in the air. The pendant hung, tangled around the hilt of the knife. It gleamed in the moonlight as Nia clutched at her empty chest.

“No!” she screamed.

She took a sudden step forward, and Lexa dropped to her knees with Clarke. She ripped the necklace from the dagger, laying it on the ground in a single movement. The blade glinted and gleamed as she plunged it through the heart of the pendant. It shattered into a dozen pieces, and as it did, Nia froze in her tracks.

Her hand clasped her chest as she gasped and panted. Clarke grimaced and gritted her teeth as she pulled herself up. She raised her hands, and instead of the water flowing through her, the ground began to quake. Roots sprung up from the mud, clinging to Nia’s every limb, wrapping around her tightly and engulfing her completely.

Clarke released a guttural growl as more and more greenery grew around Nia. Nia cried out into the night, but her screams were soon swallowed by the twisted tree she became. The branches extended towards the sky and leaves sprouted along each gnarled limb. Clarke collapsed to the ground in a heap of exhausted flesh and bones, shaded from the moonlight by the towering tree she just created.

Lexa kneeled beside her and cradled her head in her lap. “Hey, Woods,” Clarke lazily smirked. “How did you know to go for the pendant?”

“I didn’t,” Lexa shrugged. She pushed Clarke’s hair away from her sweaty forehead. “I guessed, and it paid off.”

Clarke sighed and hummed. “I owe you an explanation.”

“If you’re up for it, I am kind of dying to know what the hell you are,” Lexa smiled softly down at Clarke who mirrored her grin.

“Fairy, technically.”

“And Nia?”

“Evil fairy.”

Lexa shook her head with a gentle laugh. “And the veil you keep talking about?”

Clarke groaned as she pulled herself up to her knees. Lexa’s hands immediately shot out, eager to support her. “Don’t worry, tiger, supernatural healing will kick in in no time.” Clarke situated herself directly in front of Lexa and grasped her hands. “This world we live in is full of wondrous things. Humans are protected by most of it through a veil. It’s like a mask. It hides the mystical.”

“Why can I see it?”

“There’s always a catch, isn’t there,” Clarke teased. “I’ve heard stories but have never seen it with my own eyes. When a mystic falls in love with a human, and if that love is reciprocated, the veil drops. Legend has it that you can’t hide who you really are from the person who loves you for you.”

Lexa inhaled sharply at the implications of that statement.

“I know, it’s incredibly cheesy, but to be fair, I thought it was just a bedtime story my mother used to tell,” Clarke rambled. “I guess there’s more truth in it than I thought.”

“So I can see you because I love you?”

Clarke squeezed their connected hands. “Because I love you too. It has to be reciprocated for the veil to drop.”

Lexa shook her head. The past fifteen minutes had been an utter whirlwind. She not only discovered that her crush was a fairy, but defeated an evil fairy, and got confirmation that said crush also loved her back.

Lexa suddenly broke out in a fit of laughter. She threw her head back and let the giggles take flight. Within seconds, Clarke joined her, and their melodic chuckles filled the moonlit clearing.

“Fuck, I love you,” Clarke suddenly exclaimed towards the stars. She threw her arms around Lexa’s neck, silencing the last bit of her laughter. “I’ve been fighting it for so long. I didn’t want you wrapped up in my world. Not when it was so dangerous. But it feels so good to say it out loud.”

“Yeah?” Lexa linked her arms around Clarke’s back and pulled her fully onto her lap. “I like hearing it.”

“I love you, my hero,” Clarke smirked. She placed a quick kiss to the corner of Lexa’s mouth.

“I’m no a hero. I hardly understand what all happened here tonight.”

“I’ll tell you later, don’t worry. But for now, this fairy princess would really like to kiss her warrior under the stars.” Clarke leaned in and pressed her lips to Lexa’s, and Lexa sighed into the embrace.

Until her mind caught up to what Clarke just said. She pulled back with a start. “You’re a princess? You’re a fairy princess?”

Clarke nodded with a gentle laugh, and she pushed her hair back to reveal slightly pointed ears. “Yes, I am. And I’ll eagerly tell you all about it. But later. I have much more important things I’d like to do with my mouth right now.”
